Sonam Kapoor explains Seemantonnayan ceremony and why the ritual still matters
India Today
Sonam Kapoor observed the sacred Seemantonnayan ritual, marking her baby shower and expressing gratitude for the support of her loved ones and the craftsmanship behind her traditional outfit.
Sonam Kapoor’s baby shower was more than a celebration, it was a deeply rooted cultural moment steeped in tradition, love and community. The actor recently shared glimpses from her Seemantonnayan ceremony, offering a heartfelt reflection on the ritual and the people who made it special.
Seemantonnayan, regarded as the third of the sixteen sacred sanskars in Sanatan Dharma, is traditionally performed to bless the mother and her unborn child. Often referred to as the hair-parting ritual, it is known by different names across India, including Godh Bharai, Shrimant, and Seemantham, but, as Sonam noted, its essence remains the same: love, protection and the celebration of new life.
Sharing her thoughts, Sonam expressed gratitude for being surrounded by her closest circle during the ceremony. “This ancient ritual felt even more meaningful because all my best friends in the world showed up for me. My whole family did too. I felt so held (sic),” she wrote, capturing the emotional weight of the day.
The actor also thanked her mother, mother-in-law and sister for organising the ceremony, adding that their efforts made her feel deeply cherished and celebrated. Sonam’s posts highlighted not just the ritual itself, but the sense of togetherness that defined the occasion.
