SIDAR experts warn of a 'Connectivity Crisis' for Vizag's Bhogapuram Airport, proposing innovative solutions including a sea route for access.
While the construction of the Bhogapuram International Airport is racing toward its June 2026 deadline, a new study by the Society for Integrated Development and Research (SIDAR) has revealed a sobering reality: the “last mile” might actually take over an hour-and-a-half.
According to the SIDAR report, which was released at Dr. Lankapallia Bullayya College here on Saturday (March 14) by its president Prof. KC Reddy amid other panel members, a traveler starting from the RTC Complex currently faces a grueling 105-minute journey to cover the 50-km distance. The study, which used field surveys and real-time mapping data, identifies the stretch between Hanumanthawaka and Anandapuram as a “corridor of congestion” that could undermine the airport’s economic potential.
The research highlights a glaring efficiency gap. While the 15-km stretch from Anandapuram to the airport takes just 20 minutes, the trip to reach Anandapuram alone consumes over 63 minutes.
“Our data shows that Anandapuram has become a structural bottleneck,” Prof. Reddy said during the presentation of the report.
“Without clearing this Anandapuram local marketplace congestion, the journey to the airport will a difficult one for the average traveler,” the report says.
SIDAR has submitted a comprehensive three-phased recommendation to the GVMC, NHAI, and State authorities.
