A gunman opened fire after crashing a vehicle into a synagogue in the US state of Michigan on Thursday, prompting a large police response and security measures at nearby schools. Authorities were called to Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township shortly before 1 pm (local time) after emergency calls reported a car smashing into the building.
According to local media, the vehicle appeared to have intentionally driven into the synagogue complex before catching fire. Soon after the crash, shots were reported, leading officers to treat the situation as an active incident. Police said the suspected gunman had not been apprehended and remains at large as authorities continue searching the area.
Aerial footage from the scene showed thick smoke rising from the synagogue’s roof as several police vehicles gathered around the building. The Jewish Federation of Detroit said on Facebook that its affiliated institutions had been placed under precautionary lockdown following the incident at Temple Israel.

The synagogue complex includes the Temple Israel Early Childhood Centre, which runs a kindergarten, preschool and daycare facility. Temple Israel describes itself as the largest Reform synagogue in North America. The congregation, founded in 1941, has about 12,000 members from roughly 3,500 families. The synagogue is located about 40 miles from downtown Detroit. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.

The aircraft had also been used by senior Iranian officials and military figures for both domestic and international travel, and for coordinating with allied countries, the Israeli military said. Meanwhile, Dubai International Airport has resumed flight operations after a temporary suspension of about seven hours caused by a drone strike near a fuel tank facility.
