Schools reopen in Hyderabad after 49-day summer vacation; day begins with tearful goodbyes, anxious glances and jammed roads

Hyderabad schools reopen after summer break, bringing back traffic jams and mixed emotions among students and parents.

Hyderabad witnessed a lively transformation on Thursday (June 12, 2025) morning as the summer silence gave way to the familiar bustle of school buses, autorickshaws, and parents hurrying to drop their children off, marking the end of the 49-day summer vacation in Telangana.

Outside school gates across Hyderabad, from colonies in the Old City to arterial roads in the IT corridor, emotions swelled as children returned to classrooms. At the International School in Shaikpet, a mix of excitement and nervousness filled the air. For pre-primary students, the day began with tearful goodbyes and anxious glances back at their parents. Meanwhile, senior students were cheerful, exchanging hugs and smiles as they reunited with classmates for the new academic year.

The first day of the new academic year led to minor traffic snarls, especially around schools located on major roads, as parents and school vehicles gathered at the entrances. This also added to the already busy weekday traffic, with increased movement of institutional vehicles contributing to congestion at key junctions across the city.

“The last few days have been hectic. Covering books, labelling notebooks, and getting everything ready is a yearly ritual that signals the end of holidays,” said P. Rekha, a parent from Yousufguda.

While government and aided schools officially reopened on Thursday, many private institutions had already resumed earlier this week. “Some schools have been operational from Monday itself, while a few have informed parents that they will reopen only next week,” said Kiran Kumar, an IT professional and a parent.

This academic year also marks a new beginning for over 1.12 lakh teachers across Telangana, who completed a five-day capacity-building training. Senior administrators and school leaders, too, participated in residential workshops to gear up for the year ahead.
