The Supreme Court and the local Varanasi court will continue hearing the Gyanvapi mosque case on Thursday.
Both the Supreme Court and the local Varanasi court will resume hearings in the Gyanvapi mosque case on Thursday.
The case is centred on a petition seeking permission for Hindus to worship in the Gyanvapi mosque complex on the premise that a part of the Kashi Vishwanath Temple was demolished and the mosque built over it back in the 16th century.
On Tuesday, the Supreme Court asked the Varanasi district magistrate to ensure the area where a ‘shivling’ was found in the complex is protected without restricting the Muslim community’s right to worship. Meanwhile, the Varanasi court granted the survey team appointed by it two more days to submit its report.
On Thursday, here’s what’s on the agenda in the Varanasi court with regard to the Gyanvapi case:
1. The court will hear a petition seeking permission to prayers at the ‘shivling’ found in the premises. The same petition has also demanded demolition of the walls of the basement and removal of debris to enable collection of more evidence.
2. Another petition seeking directions for shifting pipelines (through which water is supplied for namazis to perform ‘wuzu’) from the sealed area in Gyanvapi mosque was filed by government counsel Mahendra Prasad Pandey. This too will be heard on Thursday.
3. The court will also heard a petition filed by the Hindu side asking that Ajay Kumar Mishra be included in the survey work. The Varanasi court had removed him from its three-member survey team on Tuesday for displaying "irresponsible behaviour towards the discharge of his duties" after it was alleged that he had deployed a personal cameraman to leak information to the media.
