Sanju Samson is set to receive a hero's welcome in Thiruvananthapuram after starring in India's T20 World Cup triumph, with the Kerala government planning a special reception for the Player of the Tournament.
Sanju Samson is set to receive a hero’s welcome in Thiruvananthapuram after playing a defining role in India’s triumphant T20 World Cup campaign. The Kerala government is planning an official reception for the wicketkeeper-batter, who was named Player of the Tournament after a string of match-winning performances that helped India defend their title.
According to a report by PTI, Kerala General Education and Labour Minister V Sivankutty confirmed on Monday that the state government will organise a reception in the capital city to honour Samson’s contribution to India’s World Cup triumph.
Samson, who hails from the coastal town of Vizhinjam in Thiruvananthapuram, has brought immense pride to the people of Kerala with his performances in the tournament, the minister said in a statement.
The reception will be hosted by the state government, though the exact date of the event has not yet been announced.
India secured the T20 World Cup title in emphatic fashion on Sunday, beating New Zealand by 96 runs in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. The victory saw India successfully defend the trophy with a dominant display.
Samson’s rise to Player of the Tournament honours was anything but straightforward. The Kerala batter was not part of India’s playing XI when the campaign began. He had been sidelined after a disappointing bilateral series against New Zealand earlier in the year, where he scored only 46 runs across five matches.
