The Russian troops in Ukraine's Mariupol have warned civilians to wear white ribbons or get shot, the city mayor said.
The Russian troops in the besieged city of Mariupol have warned civilians that if they do not wear white ribbons on their clothes, they will be shot.
As per a report by MailOnline, the advisor to the Mayor of Mariupol, Petro Andriushchenko, took to Telegram to share the latest threat. "The occupiers no longer 'mildly' propose that civilians wear white ribbons to mark themselves out - they have turned to direct threats to open fire on anyone seen on the street without such ribbons," he reportedly wrote.
It is alleged that Vladimir Putin's troops are forcing Mariupol civilians to wear the white ribbons, which will confuse Ukrainian snipers, and they may end up shooting them. In turn, the Russians will find out where the snipers are hidden.
Thousands of civilians - mostly women and children - and Ukrainian troops are holed up in the Azovstal steel mill in Mariupol without food supplies.
The Russians issued a second ultimatum on Wednesday to the Ukrainian troops to surrender or die. The Ukrainians are outnumbered ten to one but have refused to lay down their weapons. The Ukrainian troops who have defended the city for seven weeks are still continuing to defend the civilians taking shelter from relentless shelling. They have pleaded for help evacuating wounded civilians.
Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he is ready to swap Russian prisoners of war in exchange for the safe passage of stranded civilians and troops in Mariupol.
He said the situation in the port city is worsening. About 100,000 people have no access to food or medical supplies.
