Andhra Pradesh government allots land to TCS on Rushikonda hill for future IT campus development.
If everything goes according the plans between the Andhra Pradesh government and Mumbai-headquartered Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), the third hill (Hill No. 3) of the four Rushikonda hills to become popular as `TCS hill’ in Visakhapatnam in future.
The State cabinet recently approved allotment of 21.6 acres of land on the hill to TCS at a nominal price of just 99 paise, and it is not yet clear whether the price is for lease or sale.
The land is currently under the control of Andhra Pradesh Industrial Infrastructure Corporation (APIIC). Around 32 acres of land is currently available under the corporation in hill number 3, which is mostly suitable for information technology companies. It is learnt that the 21.6 acres of land has been allotted for TCS at the request of the company.
Speaking to The Hindu, reliable government sources said, “Yes, 21.6 acres at hill number 3 have been dedicated to TCS. Another 9.5 acres of land is available on the same hill. Talks are on to give this 9.5 acres of land to other companies. We do not know more about the agreement between the government and TCS. However, there is about 2 lakh sq ft of plug & play office (lease-based) space available for TCS to start operations till the company completes the construction of its permanent campus on the allotted land. TCS may start operations in the temporary rented building in the next three to four months.”
An infrastructure consultant who deals with buildings for IT companies said, “It can take at least three years to build an IT building with all the amenities. There are certain parameters for IT buildings. Not all sky-towers or luxurious buildings are suitable for IT companies. Visakhapatnam city has a bunch of such buildings, but most of them are not suitable for the IT companies.”
According to the official website of TCS, the company was founded in 1968 by Tata Sons Limited. TCS initially started as Tata Computer Systems when the father of Indian IT, Faqir Chand Kohli, brought a young team of IT professionals back from the US in 1968. The MNC has over 6.07 lakh consultants in 55 countries and 180 service delivery centres across the world. TCS reported consolidated revenues of US $29 billion in the financial year ended March 31, 2024.
