
Republic Day celebrated with patriotic fervour in Coimbatore

Coimbatore celebrated the 77th Republic Day with flag hoisting, cultural performances, and honors for freedom fighters and officials.
The 77th Republic Day was celebrated with patriotic fervour at the VOC Grounds in Coimbatore on Monday. District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar unfurled the national flag and accepted the guard of honour from contingents of the police, Armed Reserves, traffic wardens, home guards, NCC, Fire and Rescue Services and road safety volunteers from schools.
Mr. Giriyappanavar, along with other officials, released tricolour balloons and white pigeons into the air. The Collector honoured family members of eight freedom fighters and three Tamil language martyrs (Tamil Mozhi Thiyagigal). He presented Chief Minister’s medals and certificates of appreciation to 122 police personnel, certificates to 30 heads of government departments, 34 revenue officials and 127 officials from other departments including, doctors and administrative staff.
Cultural performances by students included yoga demonstration, karate display, Silambam, Valli Kummi, folk dances such as Karakattam, Thappattam, Oyilattam, Kolattam and Mayilattam. The Collector distributed prizes to them.
Coimbatore City Police Commissioner N. Kannan, Inspector General of Police (West Zone) A. Saravana Sundar, Deputy Inspector General of Police (Coimbatore Range) V. Sasi Mohan, Coimbatore District Superintendent of Police K. Karthikeyan, Additional Collector (Development) Sanket Balwant Waghe, Pollachi Sub-Collector R. Ramakrishnasamy, Joint Commissioner (Commercial Taxes) Thakare Shubham Dnyandeorao, Assistant Collector (Training) S. Prashanth and District Revenue Officer P. Narayanan were among the officials present.

Mayor R. Ranganayaki unfurled the national flag at the celebrations held at the Coimbatore Corporation in the presence of Corporation Commissioner M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran, Deputy Mayor R. Vetriselvan, officials and staff. A total of 1,705 officers, staff and conservancy workers were felicitated, with special recognition given to workers engaged in the upkeep of Semmozhi Poonga.
