Republic Day celebrated in the Nilgiris

Nilgiris celebrates 77th Republic Day with flag hoisting, cultural events, and recognition of outstanding government staff in Udhagamandalam.
Nilgiris district Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru unfurled the national flag and led the 77th Republic Day celebrations held in Udhagamandalam in the Nilgiris on Monday (January 26, 2026) at the Government Arts College grounds.
A total of 163 government staff including police, first responders, revenue department staff, among staff from 38 other government departments were felicitated for their outstanding work during the last year with certificates of appreciation during the event.
The Nilgiris district Superintendent of Police N.S. Nisha was also present at the event. After unfurling the flag, the Collector then received the ceremonial guard of honour from the police. Earlier, Ms. Tanneeru had garlanded the Gandhi statue at Charring Cross to mark Republic Day.

The parade at the arts college ground comprised police personnel, home guards, fire and rescue service personnel as well as NCC and NSS students. As part of the event, welfare assistance from various government schemes amounting to ₹1.35 crore was distributed to 26 beneficiaries.
Balloons and doves were also released during the celebrations to mark the event. Cultural events by the Irula and Toda adivasi communities were also organized. Dances were also performed by members of the Badaga community as well as by children from various schools in the district. The Collector also distributed prizes and certificates to students who participated in the parade and different cultural programmes.
