Replying to Governor’s address, Tamil Nadu minister seeks immediate assent to anti-NEET Bill

The minister said that students from poor backgrounds had to pay a large amount of tuition fee and hence a bill was passed to provide exemption to Tamil Nadu from Neet and was sent to the Governor.

Industries and Tamil Culture Minister Thangam Thennarasu has sought Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi’s immediate assent to the anti-NEET bill passed in the Tamil Nadu Assembly.

“Students from poor economic backgrounds are unable to study by paying a large amount as a tuition fee in medical institutions and hence, a bill was passed to provide exemption to Tamil Nadu from NEET and was sent to the Governor,” said the minister.

“Hence I believe that the Governor will stand by the sentiments of Tamilnadu people by providing immediate assent to the Bill and sending it to the Union Government," he added.

Citing the recent NEET exam results, Minister Thangam Thennarasu has said out of 1000 students in the State merit list, 579 are from CBSE, 394 are from ICSE and only 27 are from other boards.

Citing the Governor's recent reference in his Republic Day speech, the minister said that 7.5% internal reservation in the medical admission is only temporary and it cannot be seen as a permanent solution. He also added that exemption is the only solution.

Thangam Thennarasu mentioned that Governor RN Ravi, in his Republic Day address, mentioned students from Tamil Nadu should study other Indian languages just like other state students, hinting at Tamil Nadu to embrace the ‘three language’ policy.

Minister Thangam Thenarasu stated that ‘Mozhi Porattam’ (Language War) has a deep-rooted history in Tamil Nadu fighting against Hindi imposition. He said that only by respecting it did former PM Nehru agree not to make Hindi mandatory in non-Hindi speaking states.
