Ram Akhil’s story of breaking into magic
The Hindu
Ram Akhil, a village boy turned international magician, inspires with his magic. He gives message of perseverance and success to youngsters
In a quiet corner of Telangana, in the small village of Kothapalli, Peddapalli district, a young boy once dreamed of wearing a police uniform. Today, that same boy, Ram Akhil, wears a magician’s coat and leaves people in awe as he makes tables float and phones unlock with a stare. A twist of fate that led him to magic.
A feather in his cap was a solo performance during Miss World event, where he performed some mentalism tricks on the audience for about an hour at Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad recently. It was a a high-profile, international event with beauty queens from 108 countries. Ram read thoughts, unlocked phones, performed some tricks with cards and stunned the audience.
“Performing at Miss World was a surreal moment; the energy, the lights, the global audience. It was a dream-come-true moment for me. I felt proud to represent not just myself, but Indian magic,” the 32-year-old magician says.
His work has taken him to Germany, Sri Lanka, Paris, Bangkok, and Nepal. His dream is to perform in the U.S.A., and he’s already received an invitation from a Telugu cultural group there. Ram’s story is not just about magic tricks. It’s about turning hardship into hope. Coming from a poor family, he studied hard, completed B.Sc. in Biotechnology from Nizam College, and earned a postgraduate degree in Forensic Science from Osmania University.
In 2012, everything changed. Ram, then a college student and NCC volunteer, helped at an event for orphans at Hari Hara Kala Bhavan. That day, he saw magician Samala Venu, a Guinness World Record holder, perform. The moment was magical. “That show lit a fire in me,” Ram says. He soon became Venu’s assistant, learning the art of wonder from his guru.
By 2015, Ram started performing on his own. He also earned a diploma in magic from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University (renamed as Suravaram Pratap Reddy Telugu University). What sets him apart is not just his skills, but heart. He has performed about 50 free shows for orphaned children, bringing smiles where needed most. His magic includes both mentalism and conjuring. . As a magician, he performs eye-catching acts like pigeon flying, money tricks, and creates illusions using fire.
What makes Ram unique is his “money production” trick, which he says is not done by any other magician in India. He also performs a 45-degree body bend — a move made famous by Michael Jackson. His signature act is floating a table in mid-air.
