Rajkummar Rao shows support to filmmaker Onir after Defence ministry rejects his film on gay Major

Rajkummar Rao shared his reaction after the Defence ministry rejected filmmaker Onir’s film, We Are. The actor said he believes everyone should have the freedom to tell their stories.

Soon after the trailer of Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar's Badhaai Do was released, filmmaker Onir took to Twitter to shower praises upon the cast and crew of the film. He also appreciated Badhaai Do for ‘celebrating the Queer.’ This came after Onir's script for his film We Are, which is inspired by the story of a gay Major, was rejected by the Defence ministry on Friday, January 22. The film was supposed to be a sequel to the director's award-winning film I Am.

Onir reacted to the trailer of Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar's Badhaai Do, after We Are, got rejected by the Defence ministry. The reason was that the film shows an army man as a gay person. A sequel to his film, I Am, We Are, was set to explore four different stories set in four parts of India - Kashmir, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. The story was inspired by the real-life story of Major J Suresh.

“At least Some in Uniform can be shown as homosexual. Looking forward to what looks like a fun film directed by #HarshavardhanKulkarni. Congratulations @RajkummarRao @bhumipednekar for stepping into and celebrating the beautiful Queer. #PRIDE (sic),” tweeted Onir.

Now, speaking exclusively to IndiaToday.in, Rajkummar Rao stood up for the filmmaker. He said, "Well I hope he gets to tell his story soon. Why, one day, because I think people should have the freedom to tell their stories, then it is up to the audience whether they want to watch it or not. That’s why we have an official Central Board of film certification. It is there to be careful with all these things. Rajkummar Rao further added, "I have only good wishes for Onir sir. He has made some wonderful films and I hope he really continues making them."

Badhaai Do is a comedy-drama directed by Harshvardhan Kulkarnihe. Produced by Junglee Pictures, the film serves as a spiritual sequel to the 2018 film Badhaai Ho. It stars Rajkummar Rao and Bhumi Pednekar as a couple in a lavender marriage. Badhaai Do is scheduled for theatrical release on February 11, 2022.ALSO READ| Onir says it's disheartening after Defence ministry rejects script based on gay Major
