Puducherry man arrested for setting wife ablaze over family dispute; daughter dies trying to save mother

An auto driver in Puducherry, identified as Shankar, set his wife on fire over a family dispute. The fire spread to the couple’s daughter, who intervened to try and save her mother. The child died due to burn injuries and police have arrested the accused.
A man set his wife on fire over a family dispute in Puducherry. Unfortunately, the couple's daughter died in the incident, while the wife is currently undergoing treatment. The man has been arrested by Reddiarpalayam Police.
The incident happened on Uzhavarkarai Convent road in Puducherry where the accused, identified as Shankar, an auto driver, poured petrol on his wife and tried to set her on fire.
It has been alleged that Shankar and his wife, Mary Lucia, have been fighting regularly over the last few days over a family dispute. Last evening, Shankar attempted to kill Mary Lucia. Upon seeing this, their daughter, Lourdes Mary, a school student, rushed to rescue her mother. Unfortunately, the fire also spread to the child.
The mother and daughter were rushed to the hospital by neighbours who heard the two women cry for help.
They were admitted to the Government General Hospital for treatment. Lourdes Mary, died without responding to treatment. On getting information about this, the Reddiarpalayam police rushed to the hospital and questioned Mary Lucia.
The woman informed the police that during a family dispute, Shankar poured petrol on her body and set her on fire. Seeing this, their daughter tried to save her. She added that the fire spread to her daughter as well.
The Reddiarpalayam Police registered a case and arrested Shankar. Police are still investigating what was the family dispute over which he set the fire.
