Nearly a year after it was imposed, President’s Rule in Manipur was lifted on Wednesday, clearing the way for the formation of a new elected government in the violence-hit northeastern state.

NDA legislature party leader Y Khemchand Singh will be sworn in as the chief minister of Manipur at 6 pm on Wednesday, the state BJP said. The oath-taking ceremony will be held at the Lok Bhavan, where preparations had been underway since the morning.
“The swearing-in ceremony of Shri @YKhemchandSingh as the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Manipur will take place today, 4th February 2026, at 6 PM at Lok Bhavan,” BJP Manipur said in a post on X.
“Under his experienced and visionary leadership, Manipur is set to move forward on the path of peace, development, and good governance, ushering in a new era of stability and progress for the state,” the party added.
The announcement came minutes after Singh staked claim to form the government. An NDA delegation led by him met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla at the Lok Bhavan to formally seek permission to form a popular government. The delegation included two MLAs from the Kuki-Zo majority districts of Churachandpur and Pherzawl.

This moment comes days after the Supreme Court allowed Harish Rana to die with dignity – a historic first court-ordered case of passive euthanasia in India. The court acknowledged the medical opinion that Rana will never recover and that the tubes that feed him and keep him alive are only prolonging his pain.
