Lamenting that politics had become an investment, MDMK MP and party’s principal secretary Durai Vaiko said people from councillors to MPs were being identified by their caste and the amount of money they could invest in the elections.
He said for him politics was all about serving the people and a change in people’s heart would bring more service-oriented youth to politics. The Tiruchi MP was addressing a function organised to honour him for his efforts to repatriate a youngster, Madhanraj of Sippiparai in Virudhunagar district, from Myanmar.
Stating that he was not happy being in politics, Mr. Durai Vaiko said he was undergoing torture in the present day politics. Recalling that he entered politics, which he had desisted, only because of the wishes of MDMK founder Vaiko and party cadre. The party top post and the post of MP came to him. He was guided in politics by two philosophies of profit-less service to the people and people’s welfare without compromise.
“I have been telling the younsgsters to choose a discipline and a job of their personal liking so that it would give them the impetus in continuing with it. But, I am now forced to follow something (politics) which I never liked. Even a minor hurdle will pose a big challenge when you do something without interest. I am facing it now,” he noted.
However, the opportunity to serve the people in distress and the gratitude they expressed in return kept him going strong, he added.
