The police have denied permission for a protest demanding the reopening of the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi. Security was tightened at various locations in the city.
An organisation supporting the reopening of the Sterlite plant had sought permission from the police to hold a demonstration near the Food Corporation of India (FCI) godown on Thursday. However, the police refused permission for the protest.
Following this, rumours spread that the supporters might proceed with their plans without permission. As a result, the police were deployed at key locations, including the FCI godown, in the city.
Thoothukudi District Superintendent of Police issued a press release stating that the Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi had been shut down as per the court order. Permission for protests by any welfare organisation or public would not be granted. He stressed that legal action would be taken against those violating the order and engaging in unauthorised protests.
