The Bombay High Court ordered a 1993 Mumbai bomb blast convict to pay Rs 50,000 as the police escort charges to attend the wedding ceremony of his son.
Justices PB Varale and SN Modak of the Bombay High Court ordered a 1993 Mumbai bomb blast convict to pay Rs 50,000 as the police escort to attend the wedding ceremony of his son for four days in the coming week.
Riyaz Ahmed Siddiqui, a 1993 Mumbai blast convict, wanted to attend the marriage ceremony of his son between March 12 to 19, 2022.
Siddiqui, who is currently lodged at Yerwada prison in Mumbai, applied for a grant of emergency parole leave.
The DIG, Prison, Pune, on Jan 31 granted Siddiqui permission to attend the marriage, subject to a condition that he would bear expenses for the escort.
However, due to financial constraints, Siddiqui submitted an application to DIG, Prisons, for waiver of escort charges. The DIG asked Siddiqui to get parole leave for only four days subject to bearing 50% escort expenses.
In the high court on Friday, Advocate Farhana Shah appearing for Siddiqui vehemently submitted that the rider imposed by DIG of paying for escort police would prevent the convict to avail the benefits of order.
"The estimated cost of the escort is to the tune of Rs 2,55,515 for four days. Siddiqui has been sentenced to life imprisonment and his other family members are not so well to bear the expenses as such," argued Shah.
