Peter Bevan-Baker will not be running for re-election in the next provincial election, the Green Party of P.E.I. announced Thursday morning.
He was the first Green MLA elected on P.E.I. and has represented District 17 since 2015. Bevan-Baker also served as the leader of the Green Party from 2012 to 2023.
"Serving the people of New Haven-Rocky Point has been one of the great honours of my life," Bevan-Baker is quoted as saying in the Green Party's news release.
"I've enjoyed the work immensely and am deeply grateful for the trust and support of this community over the past ten years."
Bevan-Baker said he remains committed to the core values that brought him into public life, and hopes to work with the next Green candidate for the district.
He said his decision not to reoffer next election will allow him to spend more time with his family, including his wife, children and grandchildren.
Green Party Leader Matt MacFarlane thanked Bevan-Baker for his years of service to District 17, the Green Party of P.E.I. and the Island as a whole.
"As the first Green MLA elected on P.E.I., he has made such a positive difference to P.E.I. politics and the legislature," MacFarlane was quoted as saying in the party's news release.
MacFarlane also extended thanks to Philip Hamming, who has put his name forward to run as a candidate in New Haven-Rocky Point. The Green Party said further details about the District 17 nomination process will be released in the coming days.
