Over 700 persons with disabilities protest in Chennai for fifth day, demanding increased monthly assistance from the State government.
Over 700 persons with disabilities continued to protest in the city on Tuesday for the fifth consecutive day, demanding an increase in the monthly assistance given to them by the State government.
Organised by the Tamil Nadu Association for the Rights of All Types of Differently Abled and Caregivers (TARATDAC), the protestors demanded that the increase must reflect the inflation in prices of essential commodities.
“The State gives a paltry ₹1,500. A trip to the doctor takes about ₹600. Then, there is doctor’s fee and medicine expenses. If there is a need for a diaper, that’s another ₹1,800. So, the monthly assistance cannot last a month,” said Prema. M., who has a locomotor disability.
Farook Sheriff, a member of TARATDAC, said that Tamil Nadu is the lowest paying State in terms of welfare assistance for persons with disabilities. “We want it increased to ₹6,000 at the least so that we can survive. The protest will continue until our demand is met,” he said. The protestors were detained by the city police.
