A cyber fraudster was arrested in Patna with Rs 1 lakh cash and 33 ATM cards. The accused is an active member of a cyber fraud group and has duped several people.

Patna police arrested a 32-year-old man for his alleged involvement in cybercrimes from Patrakar Nagar police station area in the city on Sunday. The accused was arrested with thirty-three ATM cards and Rs 1 lakh cash. He has been identified as Kundan Kumar and hails from Nalanda district in Bihar.

Police said the cyber fraud and his accomplices cheated several people by sending them tempting messages on their mobile phones. The accused would also contact innocent people through emails and other social media platforms and allegedly duped them.

Police told TOI that Kumar, an active member of a cyber fraud group, committed cyber crimes from a rented house at Jagganpura in Patna. Police also recovered nine bank passbooks, three chequebooks and a mobile phone from the possession of the accused.

Patrakar Nagar police station SHO Manoranjan Bharti was quoted by TOI as saying that the accused was arrested from an ATM of HDFC Bank near Kendriya Vidyalaya in Kankarbagh. Bharti said Kumar, who had already withdrawn Rs 1 lakh using two ATM cards, was planning to withdraw more. But the police smelled a rat and detained him.

Upon further interrogation, the accused told the police how he and his other aides used to cheat people and withdraw money from their bank accounts. Bharti said that Kundan had bought land, branded items and a luxury car by committing cyber fraud.

According to police, the accused said that the name of his mentor is Chandan Kumar, who lives in Nawada district. Kumar said that Chandan trained him a year ago to commit cyber fraud and, following that, he became an active member of the gang involving 25 people.

Police have filed a case under Sections 420 (cheating), 467 (forgery of valuable will and security) and 468 (forgery for the purpose of cheating) of the Indian Penal Code and other relevant sections of the Information Technology (IT) Act.
