Long queues and discomfort at TKGMCH dispensary due to limited space, staffing, and encroachment, impacting patient experience.
Patients and their attendants visiting Thoothukudi Government Medical College and Hospital (TKGMCH) are being forced to wait in scorching heat to collect medicine from the hospital’s dispensary.
This is due to limited sheltered space, vehicles partially encroaching upon the sheltered area and the availability of only four counters to deliver medicines.
The TKGMCH remains one of the most sought after government health-care facilities in the district, offering a wide range of treatments, emergency care and other necessary services. However, the dispensary struggles with space constraints and limited staffing, leading to long queues discomfort for visitors.
Mohan (name changed) from Thoothukudi said that the space constraint issue has been existing in the hospital for several years. “ Despite submitting multiple petitions, no remedial steps have been taken to expand the sheltered area. Thoothukudi’s humid climate worsens the situation, especially for patients waiting in long queues, which could impact their health further,” he added.
“On certain days of the week the number of patients waiting in the dispensary area increases due to the influx of patients coming for diabetics, hypertension and antenatal care” he mentioned.
He further emphasised the need to increase the number of functioning counters to ease the waiting time. Additionally, vehicles of the visitors partially encroach on the dispensary’s limited sheltered space, adding to the discomfort and congestion.
Speaking on this, an official from the hospital administration acknowledged the encroachment issue and said that several warnings had been issued to prevent vehicles from encroaching on the dispensary area. The official assured that the issue would be resolved soon and clarified that the current number of counters is due to staffing limitations of the hospital.
