Panel to study viability of setting up varsity in Chamarajanagar

Chamarajnagar, one of the backward districts in the State, may get a university of its own as the State government has constituted an expert committee to look into the possibility of establishing a full-fledged university on the PG campus of University of Mysore (UoM) in the district. Chamarajanagar district currently comes under the jurisdiction of University of Mysore and the PG campus is spread over 55 acres. The first grade colleges – government and private – are affiliated to the UoM. Vice-Chancellor G. Hemantha Kumar, who heads the committee, told The Hindu that he had received the government order for studying the feasibility of setting up a university and added that he and the members would soon be starting the work.The election authorities are gearing up for the counting of votes cast in the simultaneous elections to Lok Sabha and Assembly seats in Andhra Pradesh, scheduled to be held on June 4. The Collectors and Election Officers of Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Alluri Sitharama Raju (ASR) districts said on May 23 (Thursday) that their teams were ready for the counting of votes.
Responding to the prolonged water scarcity, the residents of the area took to the streets in protest on Wednesday. The protest, which drew attention to their plight, stopped only after the intervention of the police. It was not until 1.30 p.m. that a 4000-litre tanker was finally delivered by BWSSB, providing relief to the water-starved residents.
