Canada had previously accused India of interference and transnational repression, including threats and alleged killings. RCMP Commissioner Mike Duheme now says current probes no longer support that conclusion.

Days after a diplomatic reset between New Delhi and Ottawa, Canada’s top police official said there is no current threat to Canadians from agents linked to the Indian government.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) Commissioner Mike Duheme said recent investigations do not show any connection between ongoing criminal activity and the Indian government.

Canada had previously accused India of interference and transnational repression, including threats and alleged killings. But Duheme said current probes no longer support that conclusion.

“We’re not seeing any connection right now with any foreign entity,” Duheme said in an interview with CTV News.

When pressed about threats to public safety, he explained that while people are being harassed or intimidated, “connecting the dots to a foreign entity—we don’t have that.”

A report by the Canadian Commission that alleged election meddling by the government became a major flashpoint between the two countries amid already frosty ties. India maintains it has never conducted foreign interference in Canada.
