Barely four months after being sworn in for a record 10th term as Bihar Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar is set to file his nomination for the Rajya Sabha on Thursday, setting off intense political activity in Patna and fuelling speculation over who could succeed him in the top post.
The Janata Dal (United) supremo, accompanied by other National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidates, is expected to reach the Assembly around 11.30 am to submit his papers. Union Home Minister Amit Shah will also be in Patna today.
In the run-up to the filing, the JDU held a series of late-night meetings, with senior leaders arriving at the residence of party leader Sanjay Jha well past midnight.
The closed-door discussions have fuelled buzz about the party’s broader strategy and the potential contours of a new government formation in Bihar.
The Rajya Sabha contest in Bihar involves five seats, with nominations closing on Thursday. The BJP has fielded its national president Nitin Nabin and Bihar unit general secretary Shivesh Kumar as candidates. NDA ally Upendra Kushwaha, president of the Rashtriya Lok Morcha, is also contesting for alliance backing for another term.
From the JD(U), Union minister Ramnath Thakur will also file his nomination as the party’s second candidate.

As per the Bill, those involved in unlawful conversions on the pretext of marriage will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and shall also be liable for a fine of Rs 1 lakh. Violations in respect of a minor, a person of unsound mind, a woman or a person belonging to the Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe will be punished with imprisonment of seven years and a fine of Rs 5 lakh.
