NIT Rourkela gets new director as K Umamheshwar Rao assumes charge

K Umamheshwar Rao has now assumed the charge as the new director of NIT Rourkela. Find out all about the new director here!
K Umamheshwar Rao assumed office as the next director of National Institute of Technology(NIT) Rourkela on February 18, 2022, succeeding Simanchalo Panigrahi, who had been appointed as interim director of the institute in October 2021. Prior to his appointment at NIT Rourkela, he served as the director of the National Institute of Technology Karnataka.
Who is K Umamheshwar Rao?
A graduate in Mining Engineering from Osmania University, K Umamaheshwar Rao worked in various mining industries for around three years.
Following this, he pursued his MTech in Mining Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU) and acquired his PHD at the Indian Institute of Technology Banaras Hindu University (IT-BHU).
He has also served as a faculty at IIT Kharagpur for almost three decades.
Chairman (Estate), and vice-chairman of Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) are amongst some of the important portfolios held by K Umamheshwar Rao.
While speaking on his priorities for NIT Rourkela, he said, "NIT Rourkela is a pride entity of Orissa. The Institute's rank in the NIRF Ranking matters today."
