More than 18.9 million eligible voters are set to elect Nepal's 275-member House of Representatives in what is being seen as a referendum on the old guard versus a restless Gen Z electorate that took to the streets last September in protests that toppled the coalition government led by KP Sharma Oli.
Nepal heads to the polls on Thursday in a high-stakes general election that comes months after a violent, youth-led uprising forced the collapse of the government headed by KP Sharma Oli.
Voting began at 7 am and will conclude at 5 pm.
More than 18.9 million eligible voters are set to elect the 275-member House of Representatives in what is being seen as a referendum on the old guard versus a restless Gen Z electorate that took to the streets last September in violent protests that ultimately toppled the coalition government.
Of the 275 seats, 165 will be filled through the first-past-the-post system, while the remaining 110 will be allocated under proportional representation.
According to Election Commission data, 3,406 candidates are contesting the 165 directly elected seats, while 3,135 candidates are in the fray for proportional representation.

Over the past week, social media has been abuzz with rumours claiming that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was killed in an Iranian missile strike. However, there remains no credible evidence. It coincided with his reported absence from cabinet meetings. However, Israel has released videos and images to assert that Netanyahu is alive.
