On Thursday, the death toll in the fire at Grant Road’s Sachinam Heights increased to eight as a 35-year-old Madhuri Chopadekar passed away due to burn injuries.

According to the report published in the Indian Express, Chopadekar was admitted in critical condition with 50 per cent burn injuries.
For the unversed, a fire emerged in the 20-storey Sachinam Heights in Nana Chowk on Grant Road on Saturday. This raised serious questions about the fire safety of high-rise buildings across the city.
The officials from the Mumbai Fire Brigade (MFB) revealed that the negligence in compliance with fire safety measures and poor implementation of the Maharashtra Fire Prevention and Life Safety Measures Act, 2006 are a few reasons for making these housing societies vulnerable to fire hazards.
Talking about the fire in a building in Grant Road, fire brigade officials said that firefighting systems were non-functional, which delayed the firefighting.
Hemant Parab, Chief Fire Officer of MFB, was quoted as saying by the Indian Express, "We will conduct a special drive to check fire safety compliance in buildings. In most of the fire incidents, firefighting systems were non-functional. Steps will be taken to ensure that buildings take fire safety seriously. Those found not following the norms will be prosecuted and more stringent action will be taken."
While six lives were claimed on Saturday due to the fire, Manish Singh, a security guard from the building who saved many residents from the fire, was declared dead on Monday.
