Rescue teams locate trapped individuals in collapsed SLBC tunnel in Telangana using phone signals; complex rescue operation underway.
The rescue teams were able to locate the eight people trapped inside the collapsed part of Srisailam Left Bank Canal (SLBC) tunnel through phone signals. Telangana Roads and Buildings Minister Komatireddy Venkat Reddy said that a mobile phone of an officer trapped there rang which led to their location.
The tunnel is nearly 44 km long. The accident occurred 13.5 km from the mouth of the tunnel. The tunnel is 400 meters below the Amrabad Tiger Reserve. Debris, slush and water seepage stood in the way of the rescue operation. Mr. Reddy, who supervised the rescue works at the site on Monday (February 24, 2025), said that vertical drilling to enter the tunnel was ruled out.
Teams from the Indian Army, Indian Navy, Singareni Collieries Coal Limited (SCCL), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and other organisations have checked the tunnel seven times. Besides, a 14 member rat miners team too reached the site. While sniffer dogs too were brought in, presence of water prevented them from entering.
Usually, a conveyor belt is used to bring back the debris from the tunnel after the tunnel boring machine does its work. However, it too was damaged in the accident. The Minister said that the conveyor belt is being repaired.
