
Ministers inaugurate mini handloom park in Salem

Ministers inaugurate a mini handloom park in Salem, enhancing support for local weavers and promoting economic development.
Tourism Minister R. Rajendran and Handlooms and Textiles Minister R. Gandhi inaugurated the mini handloom park at Vanavasi in the district on Thursday (March 5, 2026).
The Ministers inaugurated the first phase of the park constructed at a cost of ₹1.16 crore and distributed welfare assistance worth ₹41.83 lakh to 98 handloom weavers.
Speaking at the function, Minister Rajendran said that due to the able administration of Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, Tamil Nadu has been developed in all sectors. Along with Pongal gift hampers, ₹3,000 was given to the ration card holders. Likewise, along with ₹3,000 (three months of Kalaignar Magalir Urimai Thogai), ₹2,000 was provided as a summer special package to 1.31 crore women. An additional ₹2,000 was provided as a special grant to over 30 lakh vulnerable citizens. Mr. Rajendran added that as a step to set up a mini handloom park at ₹5 crore in Vanavasi, a part of the park was inaugurated.
Minister Gandhi stated that the State government increased free power units to 300 from 200 units for handloom weavers and 1,000 units from 750 units for powerloom weavers. Under the Mudra Scheme, ₹269 crore in loans were provided to 51,524 weavers. He added that for the welfare of weavers, 184 medical camps were conducted which benefited 41,800 weavers. “In 2023-24 Budget, the government announced 10 mini handloom parks across the State and the sixth park was inaugurated here, Mr. Gandhi added.
Earlier, Mr. Rajendran inaugurated additional buildings constructed at a cost of ₹60 lakh at Kitchipalayam Primary Health Centre and at Kalaignar Nagar sub-health centre (₹30 lakh) in the Corporation. He also inaugurated a water tank constructed at ₹2.48 lakh in Nathimulla Makkan Street.
In the functions, District Collector R. Brindha Devi, Salem Corporation Mayor A. Ramachandran, Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan, local body representatives, and officials from departments concerned participated.
