Transport Minister S.S. Sivashankar flagged off eight Tamil Nadu State Transport Corporation buses to as many destinations and laid foundation stone for the additional workshop building at Sankarankovil in the district on Friday.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Sivashankar said the Tirunelveli division was operating 813 city buses and 794 mofussil buses, including 662 free buses for women. The Tirunelveli division had been allotted 302 refurbished buses in 2022 – 2023 and 219 new buses in 2024 – 2025. The division would get 224 new buses and 107 freshened up buses in 2025 – 2026.
Tenkasi district had 80 city buses and 150 mofussil buses in operation, with the depots at Tenkasi, Shencottai, Puliyangudi and Sankarankovil maintaining them. Over 65,000 women were using the free bus trips in the district every day.
While the district received 65 refurbished buses in 2022 – 2023, another 39 new buses were allotted in 2023 – 2024 and 18 new buses in 2024 – 2025, he said.
The additional workshop at Sankarankovil would be built at a cost of ₹20 lakh.
District Collector A.K. Kamal Kishore, MP Rani Srikumar, Sankarankovil MLA E. Raja and Vasudevanallur MLA T. Sadan Thirumalaikumar, Managing Director of TNSTC, Tirunelveli, Dasaradhan, and General Manager Saravanan were present at the event.
