A massive fire broke out at a private cardboard manufacturing factory near Sriperumbudur on Friday (April 18, 2025) morning, destroying machines and packaging materials. The flames were brought under control after a three-hour-long firefighting operation.
A senior police official from Kancheepuram district said the private cardboard manufacturing factory, called DGI Packaging, operated out of Irungattukottai SIPCOT near Sriperumbudur. The company produces packaging materials with cardboards, which are then distributed to factories around Sriperumbudur for packing goods.
The fire broke out on Friday morning where the manufactured cardboards were stored. Within a few hours, it spread to the warehouse and other areas of the factory, where more than hundred people were engaged at work.
A total of 10 fire tenders from Sriperumbudur and Irungattukottai stations, along with personnel from the Fire and Rescue Services, arrived at the scene. They battled the fire for more than three hours and eventually brought it under control.
The preliminary investigation by the Somangalam police found that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit in the factory.
