Man held for selling banned e-cigarettes, stock worth ₹2.52 lakh seized
A 20-year-old man was arrested for illegally selling banned electronic nicotine delivery systems, commonly known as e-cigarettes, on Wednesday. E-cigarettes worth ₹2.52 lakh were seized from him.
The accused, identified as Mohammed Waqaruddin, a resident of Kalapathar, was arrested following a raid conducted by the South-East zone Task Force personnel and Kalapathar police. In addition to the illicit stock, the police also confiscated a two-wheeler and a mobile phone from him.
Investigation revealed that Waqaruddin, along with his friend Laksh Goel, a resident of Hussaini Alam, was procuring the banned products from a supplier based in Delhi, identified as Rahul. The contraband was being shipped via ‘e-cart courier service’ and the duo later sold them at inflated prices to customers in the city.
The sale and distribution of e-cigarettes have been strictly prohibited in India under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act, which bans the production, sale, import, export, and advertisement of such devices. The police have registered a case, and further investigations are underway to trace others involved in the illegal trade.
