
Man gets death penalty for rape, murder of minor in Kalaburagi

The District and Sessions Court (POCSO Special) in Kalaburagi has sentenced 28-year-old Gunderao Chopade, a resident of Jawali (D) village of Aland taluk in Kalaburagi district of Karnataka, to capital punishment for sexually assaulting a minor girl and brutally killing her. The court slapped a fine of ₹1 lakh and ordered a compensation of ₹4 lakh to the victim’s family.
Explaining the case, Public Prosecutor Shanthaveer B. Tuppad said that on July 15, 2023, the 10-year-old girl was going to her aunt’s place at Jawali (D) village. She started from Devanti village and took the shortest route through agricultural fields to reach Jawali (D) village.
Gunderao, who was working in the agricultural field, noticed the girl was alone. He dragged her into the agriculture field and sexually assaulted her repeatedly. Later, he smashed her head on a stone and threw her body in an open well in a neighbouring agricultural field.
Following a complaint, a First Information Report (FIR) was registered at Nimbarga Police Station in Aland taluk. Confirming the allegations made in the complaint, a charge sheet was filed.
Yamunappa Bammanagi, the judge (POCSO Special), heard both the parties, examined the witnesses and found the accused guilty of the crimes mentioned in the charge sheet. Gunderao was convicted under Sections 363, 376 (AB), 376 (2) (n), 302 and 201 of Indian Penal Code for kidnapping and raping a minor girl and killing her.
In his verdict delivered on April 19, the judge sentenced the accused to capital punishment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh on him under Section 4 and 6 of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012.
