The Macherla Town Police on Thursday (April 9, 2026) arrested a man on a charge of attempted rape and produced him before a court, Superintendent of Police B. Krishna Rao said.
The accused, Namala Srinivas alias Sanju, a native of Rajupalem, was remanded to judicial custody by the Additional Junior Civil Judge First Class Magistrate court in Macherla.
The incident took place on April 2 between 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. at the woman’s residence in the 13th ward of Macherla town, when she was alone at home, police said. The accused allegedly entered the house asking for water and then tried to rape her.
Investigation revealed that the accused had contacted the woman through a messaging app and later through Instagram. Police said the woman had invited him to her house and guided him to the location before the incident.
Once inside, the accused allegedly threatened and assaulted her after she resisted, police said.
The woman later freed herself and called an acquaintance, following which locals rushed to the spot and took her to the government hospital in Macherla for treatment, police added.
