Maitreyi Ramakrishnan opens up on how her Turning Red character closely resembles her

Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, who plays Priya in Turning Red, says she can totally relate to her character. The animated film from Disney and Pixar premiered today, March 11 on Disney+ Hotstar.

Turning Red highlights the rollercoaster ride of being a teenager. Produced by Lindsey Collins and directed by Domee Shi, the animated film premiered today, March 11, on Disney+ Hotstar. While middle school woes and flaring hormones underline the themes of Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red, the film also throws an interesting take on the countless personalities of evolving teens.

Turning Red tries to capture the essence of growing minds, as is seen in the character of Priya, which is voiced by actress Maitreyi Ramakrishnan of Never Have I Ever fame. Sharing her experience of walking in Priya’s shoes and essaying her signature stoic personality, the actress spoke about how her character resembled her.

Younger audiences watching Turning Red are going to accept this reality as their new normal and have a well-deserved expectation for representation. Priya is too cool for school, mysterious, middle school dweeb that personally I can totally relate to and I’m sure many others can as well! She helps Mei on this journey that she goes through by being a supportive friend who loves unconditionally," said Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

Turning Red has been written by Domee Shi and Julia Cho and produced by Lindsey Collins. Along with Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, the film’s characters have been voiced by Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Orion Lee, Ava Morse, Hyein Park, Wai Ching Ho, James Hong, and others.
