Lupita Nyong'o is pulling back the curtain on her health struggles.
The Oscar-winning actress, who revealed her battle with uterine fibroids last summer, got candid on living with the condition in an interview on "ABC News Live Prime with Linsey Davis" released Monday, March 23.
"It looked like shame," Nyong'o, 43, told host Linsey Davis of navigating the medical ordeal. "In the beginning I thought, what did I do wrong? What didn't I do? How did I not protect my body? How did I not serve my body that it has betrayed me in this way? I was hiding in plain sight."
Uterine fibroids are a type of noncancerous tumor that grows in and on the uterus, according to the Cleveland Clinic. The growths can also result in back pain, frequent urination or pain during sex. Small fibroids rarely need treatment, while large fibroids can be treated with medication or surgery.
Nyong'o went public with her diagnosis during a July 2025 meeting with the Congressional Black Caucus, sharing that she wanted to advocate for federal research funding to help "find early detection and treatment and solutions."
