A Lingayat seer at the Sri Guru Madiwaleshwar mutt in Karnataka's Belagavi district was found hanging in his quarters on Monday.
Basava Siddalinga Swami, the seer of a Lingayat mutt, was found hanging in his quarters in the mutt in Karnataka’s Belagavi district on Monday. He was a seer at the Sri Guru Madiwaleshwar mutt.
He was found dead by his followers and attendants in the early hours on Monday.
Police have recovered a letter purported to be his suicide note and an investigation is on to ascertain the cause of his death. The content of the note is not known yet.
Police sources said the seer was upset over an audio clip in which two women were discussing the alleged cases of sexual assault in the mutts in Karnataka. The women had also mentioned the name of the now deceased seer in the audio.
His death comes amidst the ongoing controversy with Lingayat seer Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru, who was accused of sexually assaulting minor girls. He was booked under sections of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
