The Nightingale of India Lata Mangeshkar passed away at the age of 92 on Sunday, February 6. Now, her last interview where she spoke about how she fears her legacy will not be remembered by the younger generation, is going viral.
A pall of gloom descended over India after news of Lata Mangeshkar's demise broke. She breathed her last on Sunday, February 6, at the age of 92, in Mumbai's Breach Candy hospital. Lata Mangeshkar was cremated with full state honours on Sunday evening in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy CM Ajit Pawar and NCP chief Sharad Pawar, Bollywood personalities like Shah Rukh Khan, Ranbir Kapoor, Javed Akhtar, Ashutosh Gowariker, among others. As India mourns the loss, Lata Mangeshkar's old interview where she spoke about how she fears her legacy will not be remembered by the younger generation, is going viral.
In an interview back in 2021, her last, Lata Mangeshkar had revealed that she fears the younger generation will not remember her the way the older generation did. "Nowadays, young people’s attention span is very limited. They do not live in the past at all. Everyone wants to live for the moment," Lata Mangeshkar had said in her last interview with Subhash K Jha. "I doubt my legacy will mean as much to future generations..." she had concluded.

Back in 2018, Lata Mangeshkar had written about how the remix culture of Bollywood causes her immense distress. T"I hear that this is what is happening these days, and the credit for the song is being given to somebody else... To ruin the core of the tune, to arbitrarily change the lyrics and to add cheap thoughts to them this kind of nonsensical behaviour causes me immense distress." a part of Lata Mangeshkar's note on Twitter read.
Lata Mangeshkar went on to add, "Every song was created with great love... There were heartfelt efforts to make a song beautiful and meaningful... Our musical heritage should not be played with, and music should be respected as an important symbol of our society and culture," a portion of her note read. She further said that it was up to the recording companies to "maintain the purity" of these songs but "they have sadly forgotten this".
With a heavy heart, India bid Lata Mangeshkar adieu on Sunday, but her legacy will live on forever.
