Koyira Gram Panchayat issues a notice to Foxconn for unpaid property taxes amid local discontent over job promises.
Foxconn facility in Devanahalli has been served a notice by the Koyira Gram Panchayat over property tax dues.
One of the largest facilities of Foxconn, known for a contract with Apple to assemble iPhones, situated in Devanahalli, came up in 2022-23.
"However, they are yet to submit details of their built up area for us to raise a tax demand. Right now, we only have details of the empty land for which we have raised a tax demand. But the firm needs to submit details of the buildings that have come up in the facility, based on which we have to raise property tax demands. Over two years after the buildings have been completed, the firm is yet to submit these details to the gram panchayat,” said Sudha Srinivas, president, Koyira Gram Panchayat.
The firm was given a month's time to respond and it ends on February 7. The firm is yet to respond to the notice, sources said.
Meanwhile, there is also discontent brewing among the local villagers, as the facility has neither provided jobs to locals as promised earlier, not paying taxes, alleged Ms. Srinivas. The sources said if the firm fails to respond positively by February 7, the villagers are planning to hold a protest.
Foxconn did not respond to an e-mail by The Hindu seeking a response on the issue.
