Congress legislator Uma Thomas remains stable on ventilator support after sustaining severe injuries from a fall at a stadium in Kerala
The condition of Congress legislator Uma Thomas, who had sustained severe injuries to the head and lungs after she fell from a gallery at Jawaharlal Nehru International Stadium at Kaloor in Kochi, Kerala, on Sunday remains stable though she continued to be on ventilator support, according to the hospital authorities on Monday (December 30, 2024).
A medical bulletin issued by the Renai Medicity Hospital after a meeting of the medical board stated that a CT scan of the head conducted on December 30 morning revealed that her brain injury has not turned severe.
Though the internal bleeding in the lungs has not aggravated, the pulmonary contusion following the fall has not improved. She will remain on ventilator support for a few days, despite her vitals being stable in view of the lung contusion. The antibiotic treatment to reduce the lung infection is continuing.
Even though the scan had showed an un-displaced cervical spine fracture, there is no need for any immediate surgical intervention to address it. It will be carried out, if required, after her condition improved, it said.
Minister for Industries P. Rajeeve, along with Hibi Eden, Ernakulam MP, said the existing treatment procedure will continue. “We have been sharing the medical findings with experts from outside and the medical board will consider their opinion,” said the Minister.
The team of doctors from Government Medical College, Kottayam, who had reached the hospital on Sunday night have left after holding detailed discussions with the doctors at the hospital, said Mr. Rajeeve.
Ms. Thomas, MLA representing the Thrikkakara Assembly constituency in Ernakulam district, had reached the venue to attend the inauguration of a mass dance event held to enter the Guinness Book of World Records. She fell from a height from the temporary stage set up on the VIP gallery. She had reportedly hit her head on the concrete ground. The initial probe by the police had revealed safety violations, including the absence of proper barricading on the stage.
