As the Karnataka cabinet meets to approve an ordinance to pass the anti-conversion bill, the state Congress chief, DK Shivakumar has questioned the government’s haste to do so. They should take up an ordinance on some development agenda or youth employment, he said.
Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that the Cabinet will likely approve the ordinance to pass the anti-conversion bill today. However, Karnataka Congress chief DK Shivakumar has questioned the government’s haste and the need for passing the anti-conversion bill through an ordinance.
Talking to reporters, CM Basavaraj Bommai said, “The Karnataka Protection of Right to Freedom of Religion Bill was passed in the Legislative Assembly in December 2021. It is pending passage in the Legislative Council, where the ruling BJP is one short of majority.”
Meanwhile, hitting out at the ruling BJP government in Karnataka, state Congress chief DK Shiakumar said, “I don't know why the Karnataka govt is in such a hurry (to pass the anti-conversion bill in its Cabinet meeting today through ordinance)... (they should) take an ordinance on some development agenda or giving employment to the youth.”
