Governor Arlekar emphasizes that justice must embody human values, fairness, and accessibility for all citizens at VIT conference.
Justice must go beyond the mere application of law and must reflect human values, fairness, and accessibility for every citizen, said Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar at the Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) in the city on Sunday.
Speaking at the valedictory function of ‘Needhikkalam 2026 – Jurisprudence for 2047 igniting legal minds for a Developed Bharat’ he said, “While law is a structured framework subject to interpretation, justice is the ultimate goal that must be delivered with compassion and a human touch.”
The two-day conference was conducted jointly by VIT Chennai with Forum of Tamilnadu Law Students (FOTLAWS) where over 700 law students participated.
G. Viswanathan, founder and chancellor, VIT said India has been lagging behind in higher education. “India’s gross enrolment ratio is 28% and in all the developed countries, it varies from 60% and over,” he said. He also requested the Governor to take action regarding the Vice Chancellor situation in the State as there are 15 universities without one which was causing difficulties.
Referring to this, the Governor noted that the delay in judicial processes has affected important administrative decisions, including the appointment of Vice-Chancellors in State Universities, thereby impacting the academic environment and the interests of students.
Addressing the gathering, Justice K. Kumaresh Babu, Judge, Madras High Court said, “The country’s constitution is the primary document paving the path for the attainment of good government. Some of the foremost measures to ensure good governance come from the constitution.”
