India is likely to get the world's longest electric vehicle highway by the end of this year, which is currently named Atal Harit Vidyut Rashtriya Mahamarg (AHVRM) but will be renamed once the construction is completed. Check all the details here.

In a major push in the green energy sector, India is likely to get the world's longest electric vehicle highway by the end of this year. The project- Atal Harit Vidyut Rashtriya Mahamarg (AHVRM) is named after former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, but the highway will be renamed once the work is completed.

The announcement for the same was supposed to be made in November last year during PM Narendra Modi's Jewar airport foundation stone laying speech. However, due to slow progress in the work during lockdown, it was postponed.

Now, the government is mulling to complete the project by the end of this year or early next year.

Project Director of National Highway for Electric Vehicles, Abhijeet Sinha said, " To start with, we will have 100 electric cars and 25 electric buses on both the highways. Cars will be available for hiring with chauffeur too. There will be 12 charging points, out of which two will be completely solar powered. This will be the world's longest electric vehicle highway."

The current longest electric vehicle highway is at Berlin in Germany, with a total length of 109 kilometres. The total length of AHVRM will be nearly 500 kilometres.

"Yamuna Expressway and Delhi Jaipur Highway (NH8) will be completely converted to facilitate electric vehicles. Any personal or taxi electric vehicle, will be monitored round the clock on the E-way and in case of any breakdown, assistance will be provided within 45 minutes without making any distress calls," said Sinha.

The highway charging stations will be profitable and break even of the investment will be within 36 months, making it the most profitable electric mobility project, he added.
