GHMC Commissioner directs departments to prepare for monsoon, emphasizing coordination to ensure city residents face no inconvenience.
Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) Commissioner R.V. Karnan directed all departments to complete monsoon-related preparatory works in coordination, ensuring no inconvenience to the city’s residents during the rainy season.
On Friday, he held a review meeting at the GHMC headquarters with officials from the Engineering Department, Traffic Police, and Zonal Commissioners.
Mr. Karnan stressed the need for effective inter-departmental coordination to deliver efficient services during the monsoon. The meeting covered the progress of desilting operations, identification and resolution of water-logging points, and strategies to handle emergency situations during heavy rainfall.
The Commissioner issued instructions for speedy and thorough cleaning of the city’s major nalas and stormwater drains. He called for close coordination between the GHMC and the traffic police with regard to clearance of water logging on roads. Emergency monsoon teams should be deployed wherever required, he added.
To enhance responsiveness, mobile response team vehicles will be branded with signage and their contact numbers shared with all police stations. Mr. Karnan proposed strengthening of the Command Control Centre to facilitate real-time coordination between GHMC and traffic police. A comprehensive traffic management plan is also being prepared to prevent congestion and accidents during the monsoon.
Commissioner Karnan said the deputy engineers and assistant engineers should be on the call round the clock and GHMC staff should be kept available 24/7 at the police control room for meeting emergencies.
He also directed for problematic waterlogging areas to be jointly inspected by local police ACPs and Zonal Commissioners to implement appropriate solutions. A city convergence meeting with other stakeholder departments will be convened shortly.
