Housing, drinking water get priority in Alappuzha municipal Budget

Alappuzha municipality's Budget for 2025-26 boosts development, housing, anti-drug initiatives, waste management, and clean drinking water projects.
Development, drinking water, housing, anti-drug initiatives and waste management receive a major boost in the Alappuzha municipality’s Budget for 2025-26.
The ₹9.6-crore surplus Budget, with a revenue of ₹219.34 crore and an expenditure of ₹209.74 crore, was presented by municipal vice-chairman P.S.M. Hussain on Saturday.
To combat drug abuse, the Budget proposes the formation of a municipal-level defence force. Vigilance committees will be established at the ward level to curb the production, distribution, and consumption of illegal drugs. Besides, the municipality plans to set up alternative recreational platforms for youth with a special emphasis on sports. An amount of ₹10 lakh has been allocated for the anti-drug campaign.
Under the Easy Kitchen project, a sum of ₹7.5 crore has been earmarked to improve kitchen facilities for 1,000 economically disadvantaged families. The Budget proposes the distribution of nutritional food kits to all senior citizens within municipal limits. An amount of ₹50 lakh has been set aside for this.
The Budget has allocated ₹10 crore for constructing 1,500 houses in a bid to transform Alappuzha into a municipality free of landless and homeless people. Title deeds will be issued to over 100 families residing on land owned by the municipality during 2025-26.
To ensure clean drinking water for all residents, the ongoing project to provide domestic water connections will be completed in 2025-26. A new 30-km drinking water distribution pipeline will be laid. A sum of ₹100 crore has been set aside for drinking water projects under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation scheme and Kerala Infrastructure Investment Fund Board.
For improved waste management, the civic body will implement ‘Haritha Griham’ project, focusing on sustainable household waste management. A sum of ₹2.5 crore has been allocated for various projects at Alappuzha General Hospital. Besides, ₹1.20 crore has been set aside for the renovation and maintenance of primary healthcare centres and the expansion of palliative care services.
