Hoardings that pose a threat to public safety yet to be removed

Kerala SHRC directive to remove dangerous hoardings in Kozhikode city not implemented, posing public safety risks.

The recent directive of the Kerala State Human Rights Commission (SHRC) to remove hoardings that pose a threat to public safety has not been implemented by outdoor advertisers in Kozhikode city. Besides, delay in identifying the hoardings by the Corporation adds to the problem.

“No one will remove these hoardings voluntarily as huge investments have been made to place them in prominent public spots. So far, there has been no effort to identify and mark the dangerous ones through a proper safety audit,” said Mahesh Babu, a member of the Mokavoor residents’ association. He was referring to a fallen billboard during heavy rain that posed a serious safety risk. He added that the District Disaster Management Authority should take immediate action to address safety concerns in the area.

Autorickshaw drivers in the city have pointed out that the highest number of such hoardings were located near commercial complexes on Mavoor Road, Nadakkavu, Eranhipalam, Thondayad, and West Hill. They warned that the proximity of parking areas and bus shelters in these spots increases the risk of serious accidents during the monsoon season, especially with stronger winds.

“Heavy metals are usually used to construct billboard frames, making the impact unpredictable if one falls accidentally from a height. At the very least, the quality of the metal structures should be audited, as some private companies have been found dismantling them within weeks of installation,” said Sunil Kumar, an industrial worker from Malikadavu. He also pointed out that many frames appeared rusty, which poses a definite safety hazard.

Meanwhile, Corporation sources said the standing committee on public works has already begun addressing the issue following instructions from the Commission. They added that such hoardings would be identified soon with strict follow-up action planned within a week.
