Hijack, betrayal, conspiracy: Opposition after Nitish Kumar's Rajya Sabha bid
India Today
Congress veteran Jairam Ramesh said a coup has been carried out in Bihar under the conspiracy hatched by "G2", which appeared to reference Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.
The Opposition came all guns blazing at the BJP after Nitish Kumar's announcement for the Rajya Sabha bid, calling the move a betrayal of people's choice and also warning NDA allies of similar consequences. The 75-year-old JD(U) boss explained in an emotional note to voters that his decision to contest the forthcoming Rajya Sabha elections was in line with his long-harboured desire. However, the development was not only criticised by the Opposition members, but it also didn't sit well with Kumar's JD(U) workers who vandalised the party office.
Nitish Kumar thanked the people of Bihar for trusting him for 20 years. But, Congress veteran Jairam Ramesh took the opportunity to take a barb at "G2" – appearing to refer to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah for hatching a "conspiracy".
"What the Indian National Congress was repeatedly saying during the Bihar election campaign has now been proven true. Under a conspiracy hatched by G2, a coup has been carried out in Bihar to seize power. In many ways, this is a major betrayal of the people's mandate," Ramesh tweeted.
Congress MP Manickam Tagore cautioned other NDA partners, such as TDP's N Chandrababu Naidu, Shiv Sena's Eknath Shinde and AIADMK's Edappadi K Palaniswami, saying "mandates can be rewritten and chairs can change hands".
"The people of Bihar voted for Nitish Kumar ji as Chief Minister. But what we see now looks like a backdoor entry model of the BJP. Using power and pressure, Amit Shah seems to be reminding every ally who the real boss is. A clear message to leaders like N Chandrababu Naidu, Edappadi K Palaniswami and Eknath Shinde: In this alliance, mandates can be rewritten and chairs can change hands. Ally have to surrender to Narender," he tweeted.
Bihar Opposition leader and Nitish Kumar's former ally Tejashwi Yadav was somewhat empathetic of the 75-year-old politician. The RJD leader said if Kumar was in his fold, he would not "have to face such days".
