Coimbatore's first-time voter enrolment hits record high, with over 53,000 young voters registered this year, says Collector.
First-time voter enrolment in Coimbatore district in 2026 has been the highest in recent years, District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar said during an interaction with journalists at The Hindu office in Coimbatore city on Saturday (March 7, 2026).
The Collector, who visited the newspaper’s printing facility and interacted with editorial, production and marketing staff, said the district administration had recorded a rise in the number of young voters registering their names in the electoral rolls during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR).
He said enrolment of first-time voters in the 18–19 age group had increased to 53,646. Before SIR, the number stood at around 40,000.
To encourage youth participation, the district administration conducted special enrolment camps at over 100 colleges in the district, which has over 180 colleges. Campus Ambassadors and Electoral Literacy Clubs were engaged to create awareness among students on the importance of registering as voters.
The Collector said the 20–29 age group accounted for more than 4.4 lakh voters in the district, marking an increase of over 50,000 voters compared to the draft electoral rolls.
Speaking on preparedness for the upcoming assembly election, he said the district administration had begun multiple rounds of training for officials involved in election duties. “The Election Commission of India is particular about conducting elections in a free and fair manner and we are making all the necessary arrangements,” he said.
