Heavy rains, accompanied by strong winds, lashed Mysuru on Tuesday night, bringing much-needed relief from the searing heat. However, the downpour also left a trail of destruction as it brought down many trees and damaged some electric poles.
The rain, which began around 8.30 p.m., caught residents off guard. Motorists were stranded on waterlogged roads while thunder and lightning intensified. Several areas, including Vontikoppal, J.L. Puram, and Gokulam, reported incidents of branches falling and trees being uprooted leading to blocked roads and snapped power lines. Some electric poles were also damaged in the process.
Stormwater drains overflowed, flooding roads and hindering traffic movement.
In Doddamaragowdanahalli, a massive banyan tree was uprooted owing to the rain and fell on nearby mango trees laden with fruit, damaging them.
